Wednesday 08 July 1998

22.33 Hrs: Mia and Gustav arrived with British Airways flight BA 7991 at Vancouver International Airport, where we picked them up.

00.30 Hrs: Tired after the 14 hour trip, they fell asleep.

Thursday 09 July 1998

07.30 Hrs: Gustav was already awake. The time difference really screws up the biological clock. Eline went to work at 06.00 and Ton followed at 08.00 AM. Later that day, Gustav and Mia went downtown, had coffee and visited Gastown. Later with Eline to the Lonsdale Quay Market to shop for the barbecue.

18.00 Hrs: BBQ on Third Beach on Stanley Park. What a great sunset ... and fresh BC salmon on the grill.

22.30 We finished the night with a cafe latte at Starbucks on Denman street.

Eline and Mia, shopping at Save On Foods

Eline had a day off. Mia, Gustav and Eline went to the Lynn Valley suspension bridge. After that, they went up Grouse Mountain with the gondola. After shopping at the grocery store, Gustav was the master cook of the diner he prepared for us at home. Big curry gamba's ... mmmmmm.

Saturday 11 July 1998

Biking in rainy Stanley Park and Vancouver Aquarium. In the evening we went to the "Capitol 6" movie theatre: Small soldiers, with Peter and Marianne from Holland (they were visiting too), Frans Luit (Dutch guy who also lives in Vancouver), Eline en Ton.

Sunday 12 July 1998

World Cup Soccer finale was on TV: France-Brazil (3-0). After that we went to downtown Vancouver. In the evening: diner at The Keg in North Vancouver with Rein, Deborah, Marianne, Peter, Eline and Ton.

Monday 13 July 1998

Peter and Marianne were so kind to pick us up from North Vancouver and drive us to our car rental company (Budget) where we had to pick up our upgraded car. Drove to Whistler via Horseshoe bay. Cloudy, couldn’t see the mountains.

Tuesday 14 July 1998

River rafting in Cheakamus river. Just GREAT, even though it rained.

Wednesday 15 July 1998

On the way to Kamloops the scenery changed from beautiful green mountains to very dry hills. In Kamloops the Motel had a pool, and the weather was sunny.

Thursday 16 July 1998

Visited the Shuswap Indians museum.

Arrived in Valemont very late in the evening. Valemount is just a tiny village below the real mountains, The Rockies.

Gustav and Mia in the Rocky Mountains. Gustav and Mia, what a scenery!

Friday 17 July 1998

Drove up in the Rocky Mountains. Saw Mt. Robson, the highest point in the Canadian Rockies. We didn’t hike there.

Just after we paid the fee to enter the National parks we saw the first elks (in Sweden we would call them deer.) Arrived in the town of Jasper late lunch-time. Found a Bed&Breakfast place. From the balcony it was an adorable view.

Went to Maligne Lake, Medicine Lake, Maligne Canyon and as a good end of this terrific day we took the tramway up to Whistler mountain, hiked to the top and watch the sunset.

Saturday 18 July 1998

Had breakfast at the foot of Mount Edith Cavell. Hiked to the glacier and we drove the scenic Icefields Parkway (between Jasper and Banff). Stopped at various sights.

Took the Snowcoach (a bus with enormous wheels) out on the Athabasca Glacier. Mia forgot to change shoes so she walked on the glacier with sandals.

In the village of Lake Louise we got into a tourist trap! We arrived late, all accommodations were full except the very expensive hotels.

Sunday 19 July 1998

Rented a canoe and paddled around Lake Louise. It was a nice, sunny morning and we went there early, before the tourist-crowds. In the afternoon we drove to Banff.

Monday 20 July 1998

In Banff we had a bath in the hot springs and went to see Bankhead - an abandoned, old mining town. We drove the Lake Minnewanka drive and stopped to have a picnic lunch at a nice place called Two Jack Lake (Picture: Mia is enjoying the scenery).

Picnic in Canada.

Tuesday 21 July 1998

River raft outfit.

We decided to go whitewater rafting once again. We found out that there is good rafting at Kicking Horse River west of Banff and we were going in that direction anyway so it suited us fine. The weather was perfect, hot and sunny, and the river was fantastic. Our guide was a very funny and a completely crazy Australian guy. We went out for one hour first. It was so great and the river was wild. We had the chance to go with some other people all the way to Golden. We took the chance and stayed on the river for one more hour.

On the way to Kicking Horse River we stopped to see The Great Divide (from there the water divides and flow east to the Atlantic and west to the Pacific ocean) and Takakkaw Falls.

We rented a log cabin in Canyon Hot Springs, east of Revelstoke.

Wednesday 22 July 1998

Started the day with a bath in the hot springs and then we left the National parks heading for Okanagan valley, a sunny valley full of orchards and vineyards.

We stayed at `Cinnamon Stick Bed and Breakfast´ in Salmon Arm. It was a fantastic, huge log house with a lovely view over Shuswap Lake. In the evening we went down to the wharf in Salmon Arm to see a local rock n’roll band play.

Thursday 23 July 1998

Drove to Kelowna. Stopped to buy fresh fruit in the orchards and visited the Grey Monk Winery. Went to the beach in Kelowna and took a swim in Okanagan Lake.

Friday 24 July 1998

Stayed in Osoyoos near the American border. The weather was scorching hot. The temperature was around 40 degrees Celsius. It was already 29 degrees at 9 o'clock in the morning! We stopped at a nice beach in Penticton for swimming and sunbathing. Unfortunately we underestimated the power of the sun and got slightly burned!

Visited another vineyard, Tinhorn Creek.

Saturday 25 July 1998

17.00 Hrs: Mia and Gustav returned at Eline and Ton's apartment. We ordered pizza's. Now we’ve been driving about 2800 km, and that’s just one corner of the huge country Canada!

20.45 Hrs: We took the Seabus to downtown. After a 30 minute walk we arrived at the beach between Granville Island and English Bay to watch the first Benson & Hedges "Symphony Of Fire" (the first out of 4). It was the U.K who did this first show during this ninth edition. 25 Minutes of blasting fireworks on the rhythm of music, where hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed the show from all surrounding beaches and boats.

23.00 Hrs: After the fireworks we had a drink at the apartment of Rein and Deborah.

01.30 Hrs: Back home.

Yeah, yeah, yeah ...

Sunday 26 July 1998

13.00-14.00 Hrs: Gustav and Ton went hunting for a guitar foot pedal.

14.00-17.00 Hrs: Mia and Gustav went shopping in downtown Vancouver, while Ton went grocery shopping for the barbecue. Eline had to work until 23.30.

Cheers, skol, proost, etc.

18.30 Hrs: Gustav, Mia and Ton took the ferry to Bowen Island. There we first paid a visit a the lake in the middle of the island. At about 19.00 we started the BBQ in Snug Cove.

22.00 Hrs: The last ferry took us back to Horseshoe Bay. There we took Marine Drive back to West Vancouver. We also picked up Eline from work and went home.

01.00 Hrs: Time to go to bed.

Monday 27 July 1998

07.15 Hrs: Gustav and Mia left for a ferry trip to Vancouver Island. The Horseshoe Bay-Nanaimo ferry. There was only a half hour waiting line. Horseshoe Bay

19.00 Hrs: Back to the mainland with the ferry from Schwarz Bay to Tsawwassan.

23.00 Hrs: Returned to Eline and Ton's apartment after a beautiful sunny day on Vancouver Island.

Tuesday 28 July 1998

12.00 Hrs: Gustav purchased an new distortion foot pedal (on Lonsdale) for his Gibson electric guitar.

16.00 Hrs: We left North Vancouver, heading to the airport. On the way, we had to pick up Ton from the office.
